Introduction

This document provides the design and structure rationale behind our digital information system’s (IS) resources for Scenario 2: SME Digital Transformation – Retail and Small Business. Small and medium businesses operating in the South African retail industry usually operate using paper documentation, point-of-sale systems that do not necessarily work together, and disparate spreadsheets. Although such processes are sufficient for trading, they introduce operational inefficiencies, errors, security risks as required by POPIA, and pose serious constraints for the growth of the business.

Our team has been tasked with developing digital websites as IS consultants to ensure that the digital transformation of small and medium enterprises occurs without too much friction. The main aim of this information system is to provide a practical understanding of complex IS theories and how to implement them within the day-to-day running of businesses. It targets non-technical retail owners and administrators of the business.

The intended audience for the tool includes owners of small retail businesses, managers of stores, and administrative workers that have low levels of knowledge of IT issues. To maximize the user experience of navigation, the website features a hierarchy of content, diagrams and jargon-free language. In each section the principles of IS studies, such as the Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom (DIKW) pyramid, the analytics maturity frameworks, and the Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability (ACID) properties are translated into practical situations of retail business, thus showing their value.

Conclusion

The objective behind this project was to create an accessible and research-based digital tool to tackle Scenario 2: SME Digital Transformation. Small and medium sized retailers often encounter difficulties regarding keeping written records, securing data, and managing their inventories. By following the structured process, the project was able to meet important milestones in all the areas:

In conclusion, digital transformation is not limited only to big firms.

Through the provision of user-friendly tools, a strong data infrastructure, and decision-making systems, even small retail firms can be able to enjoy operational resilience, compliance, and scalability within the South African retail environment.
